DIY Cloche Bell Ghosts
10-Minute Halloween Magic — Colorful, Charming & Budget-Friendly
October is the season for spooky charm, glowing lights, and handmade hauntings. If you’re short on time but still want to add some Halloween personality to your yard, these DIY Cloche Bell Ghosts are the perfect project. They’re fast, inexpensive, and look incredible — day or night.
Jeff calls them my “Fry Guys” (if you know, you know). And honestly, he’s not wrong — they’re quirky, colorful, and a little too cute to be scary.
✨ Materials Needed
Plastic bell cloche (from Dollar Tree or similar)
Fabric of your choice — solid or patterned (I used bright polka dots and sheer color layers)
Coordinating or contrasting tulle fabric
Witch hats (Dollar Tree or Michaels)
Black acrylic paint or permanent marker (for eyes)
Wire for hanging
Scissors and hot glue gun
Tip: While the cloches are Dollar Tree finds, I sourced my fabrics from Joann Fabrics before they closed, but you can grab similar fabric at Michaels or any local fabric store. Choose colors that match your personality — bright and fun, or moody and mysterious.
🪄 Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep the Cloche
Remove any stickers or labels, then flip your cloche upside down. This will form the ghost’s head and body.
Step 2: Paint the Eyes
Using black paint or a permanent marker, draw two oval eyes about a third of the way down the cloche. Don’t worry about perfection — uneven shapes add to their charm.
Step 3: Add Fabric Layers
Drape your chosen fabric over the cloche, making sure it hangs evenly around. Then layer your tulle fabric over the top — either coordinating or clashing colors depending on your style.
👉 In my case, lime green and purple dots for one, bright blue with shimmer for another.
Step 4: Thread the Wire for Hanging
Run your hanging wire straight through the top of the cloche and through both layers of fabric. This keeps everything secure, even on windy nights.
Step 5: Add the Witch Hat
Place your witch hat on top, sliding the wire through its point so it stays centered when hung. Adjust the layers to drape naturally.
I tried to get some close-ups of the ghosts from underneath, but they’re hung pretty high. I didn’t feel like hauling out a ladder for daytime shots, so most of the photos are from ground level — but you’ll get the idea!
💡 Optional: Add Lights
If you want them to glow at night, tuck a small battery tea light or LED string inside the cloche before you hang them. The fabric diffuses the light beautifully!
🌙 Display Tips
Our ghosts are hanging from a wire that runs between our front porch column and the big maple in our yard. We wrapped the support wire in colorful Halloween lights, so everything sparkles together after dark.
🧺 Storage Hack
Another reason I love these — easy storage! Just unhook the hanging wire, stack the ghosts (wire hats and all) in a tote, and they’re ready to hang again next year. No fuss, no tangles, no fluffing required.
✨ Final Thoughts
These Cloche Bell Ghosts prove that Halloween magic doesn’t have to take all day (or a workshop full of tools). With just a few supplies and a dash of personality, you can create something that makes the neighborhood smile — or at least stop to ask, “Did you make those yourself?”
We didn’t actually spotlight the Cloche Bell Ghosts — the glow you see in the photos comes from nearby decorations. The blue light is from our chicken wire ghosts, and the purple hue is from the witch trio behind them. The mix of colors gives the whole yard an ethereal, layered glow — like the ghosts are part of a bigger haunting.
Whether you go classic white or full technicolor like I did, they’ll bring instant handmade charm to your spooky season.
