What Is Epoxy?
Epoxy resin, known by chemists as epoxides or polyepoxides, are polymers that can be chemically cross-linked with various hardening agents or “curatives” to create a solid material. Epoxy is basically a synthetic liquid that comes in two parts — a resin and a hardener. When you mix the two in a predetermined ratio, they cure into a very strong plastic with excellent adhesive properties.
Because epoxy cures through chemical reaction rather than drying, epoxy resin must be mixed just before it is used and there are various formulas of epoxy for different applications. Our Bar & Table Top 1:1 epoxy is meant for thin (1/8″) pours and will cure relatively quickly. It is mixed in a 1:1 ratio which gives it the right balance of cure time and an acceptable amount of heat generated as it cures.
Our DEEP POUR 2:1 epoxy is meant for river tables and casting pours multiple inches thick. It is mixed in a 2:1 ratio and has a slightly longer cure time which keeps the heat generation within acceptable limits and prevents the cracking and shrinking problems inherent in many epoxy formulas when poured that deeply.
Once mixed, the clock starts ticking and the resin begins to cure and you must execute your project right away. You can’t save leftover epoxy for later so having the correct amount mixed (or at least more than you need) is important.
